Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office: Inmate Search, Records & Services

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office handles far more than patrol. Depending on what you need, you may be looking for the current jail roster, a police report, civil-process service, fingerprinting, a local background check, inmate visitation, commissary deposits, victim help or the correct office in Sarasota or Venice.

This guide separates those services so you can go directly to the right official resource instead of calling several offices or relying on an outdated directory.

Independent-site notice: CountySheriffsOffice.org is an informational resource and is not operated by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, Sarasota County government, the Sarasota Clerk of the Circuit Court, Florida Department of Law Enforcement or any jail-service provider.
Do not use one Sheriff page for every task. The Sheriff’s Office separates law-enforcement services, corrections, civil process, records, fingerprinting and background checks across different offices and systems. Using the correct division first can save a wasted trip.

Local jurisdiction

The Sheriff Does Not Handle Every Incident Inside Every Sarasota County City

This is one of the most important local distinctions. Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office serves county areas and provides countywide functions such as corrections, court services and several specialized services, but the cities of Sarasota, Venice and North Port have their own police departments.

The Sheriff’s online reporting system specifically tells users that an incident occurring inside the city limits of Sarasota, Venice or North Port should be reported to the appropriate municipal police agency instead.

Local records tip: an inmate may be in Sarasota County Jail even though Sarasota Police, Venice Police, North Port Police or another agency made the arrest. For the original incident report, contact the arresting agency rather than assuming the Sheriff created the report.
Arrests and current custody

How to Search Sarasota County Arrests and Inmates

The Sheriff’s official Arrests & Inmate Search is the correct starting point when you need current or prior Sheriff-hosted arrest information.

The Sheriff’s disclaimer is important: the database may show current and prior offenses, is updated regularly, but can change quickly and does not provide the final disposition of criminal proceedings.

Open the Sheriff’s official arrest and inmate page. Avoid copied mugshot directories when current custody matters.
Search the legal name carefully. Begin with the surname if a full-name search produces no match.
Compare identifying details. Do not assume a common-name match is the correct person.
Record the inmate identifier. You may need it for deposits, mail and jail communication services.
Check the arresting agency. That agency may control the incident report.
Check the Clerk for final court disposition. Jail information is not the same as the final court record.
After opening the official Sarasota County Arrests & Inmate Search:
  1. Use the inmate or arrest search displayed on the Sheriff page.
  2. Search using the person’s legal name.
  3. Open the correct match.
  4. Compare the arrest date, charge, booking information and arresting agency.
  5. Save the inmate ID or booking information needed for jail services.
  6. Use the Sarasota Clerk of Court for later case disposition.
Arrest is not conviction: the Sheriff explicitly states that arrestees are innocent until proven guilty. Charges shown during booking may later change, be dismissed or result in a different court outcome.
What happens after arrest

Sarasota County Jail Booking, Release and Bail Payments

The Sarasota County Corrections Division operates the county jail at 2020 Main Street. The Sheriff says roughly 50–60 people are booked each day on average.

During booking, staff check for local warrants and possible charges or holds from outside Sarasota County. Property is logged, the arrestee is photographed and fingerprinted, a medical screening is performed, and Pre-Trial Services conducts an interview before housing classification.

Bail card payments

The Sheriff’s booking page says bail payments up to $7,500 can be made by card for Sarasota County Jail inmates through the approved payment service, with Pay Location Code 8673.

After opening the official Sarasota jail booking page:
  1. Confirm the inmate and current bond before paying.
  2. Read the Sheriff’s current bail-payment instructions.
  3. Use the payment provider linked by the Sheriff.
  4. Confirm Pay Location Code 8673 when the official page still lists it.
  5. Keep the payment receipt and confirmation number.
Do not assume payment guarantees immediate release. Another warrant, outside hold, court condition or processing requirement may still affect release.
Family contact

Sarasota County Jail Video Visitation

  4. Select an available visit time.
  5. Review the current provider price before paying.
  6. Remember that visits may be monitored and recorded.
Attorney visits: the Sheriff says attorneys generally visit during normal business hours but can be accommodated at other times, subject to reasonable delays for meals, headcounts or facility operations.
Commissary, telephone and tablet accounts

The Sheriff currently identifies Trinity Services Group as the commissary provider and publishes several deposit routes.

Must follow the current payee and inmate-ID instructions

The Sheriff page currently states a minimum electronic deposit of $25, maximum of $100, a $200 weekly deposit limit, and no more than five transactions per inmate and credit-card number. Provider fees can change, so confirm them at checkout.

After opening the official inmate payment page:
  1. Choose commissary, telephone or tablet service based on what you actually intend to fund.
  2. Confirm the inmate’s legal name and PIN or resident ID.
  3. Check current provider fees.
  4. Review deposit minimums and limits.
  5. Keep the confirmation until the inmate verifies the funds.

Telephone service is a separate account

The Sheriff currently identifies Global Tel*Link / ConnectNetwork for inmate telephone service. Friends and family establish a prepaid collect account through the provider.

Tablet service is also separate

The jail provides inmate tablets through the current provider system. The Sheriff directs family members to GettingOut for certain tablet-related account funding. Do not assume one deposit automatically funds commissary, calls and tablet services.

Payment mistake to avoid: confirm the account type before paying. Commissary deposits, prepaid phone accounts, video visitation and tablet services are not necessarily the same balance.
Mail rules changed

Do Not Send Ordinary Inmate Mail to the Sarasota Jail Building

This is a major local detail. Sarasota County says ordinary non-legal inmate mail is no longer accepted directly at the correctional facility.

Effective August 18, 2023, regular inmate mail must be sent to the Sheriff’s contracted mail-scanning address:

Regular inmate mail Sarasota County Corrections Facility, FL
INMATE NAME, ID NUMBER
PO Box 247
Phoenix, MD 21131
Legal mail Inmate Name
Sarasota County Correctional Facility
2020 Main Street
Sarasota, FL 34237

Regular mail is scanned for the inmate to view electronically. The Sheriff warns that original mailed documents are destroyed after processing, so do not mail original birth certificates, marriage certificates, Social Security cards or irreplaceable photographs.

After opening the current Sarasota inmate-mail instructions:
  1. Determine whether the correspondence is ordinary mail or qualifying legal mail.
  2. Use the correct address for that mail type.
  3. Print the inmate name and ID clearly.
  4. Review the prohibited-content rules.
  5. Send copies rather than irreplaceable originals.
Important: regular mail sent directly to the correctional facility may be returned. Legal mail has a separate Sarasota address and must meet the jail’s legal-mail requirements.
Personal belongings

Sarasota County Inmate Property Has Its Own Rules

The jail does not generally accept property mailed or delivered for inmates, including items intended for release. The Sheriff identifies prescription glasses as an exception when accompanied by the required eyeglass prescription.

Property release

An inmate can complete a property-release slip authorizing another person to collect releasable property. The person picking it up must have appropriate identification.

The Sheriff currently says property can be released seven days a week except between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.. Property-release slips are valid for five business days.

Hardship fund release

The property page says hardship fund releases are considered only when requested within ten days of the arrest date and remain subject to account review and approval.

After opening the official Sarasota inmate-property page:
  1. Confirm whether the item can legally be released.
  2. Have the inmate complete the property-release slip.
  3. Confirm the slip is still valid.
  4. Bring acceptable picture identification.
  5. Call 941-861-4601 to confirm the property is ready before travelling.
Reports and public records

How to Request Sarasota County Sheriff Records

Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office provides public records under Florida’s public-records law. A Sheriff case number is the most useful identifier, but the Records Section says a request can also be located using details such as incident location, date and time, or the person who contacted the Sheriff’s Office.

Records Section 1st Floor, Criminal Justice Center
2071 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34237
Records phone 941-861-4025
Public-facing hours Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. on the current public-record request page
Records email Records@sarasotasheriff.org
Identify the agency that created the report. An arrest at the county jail does not necessarily mean SCSO created the incident report.
Find the case number when possible. It is the fastest way to identify one incident.
If no case number exists, prepare identifying facts. Use the incident date, approximate time, location and involved names.
Submit through the Sheriff’s current records-request route. Online requests are convenient for most users.
Do not assume every record is immediately releasable. Exemptions, active investigations, privacy rules and redactions may affect disclosure.
After opening the official Public Record Requests page:
  1. Choose the online request option when appropriate.
  2. Enter the SCSO case number if you know it.
  3. Otherwise provide enough incident detail to locate the record.
  4. Specify exactly what record you want.
  5. Keep your request confirmation for follow-up.
Better request wording: “Incident report for case 26-XXXXX on September 10 at [location]” is easier to process than “send everything you have about this person.”
Non-emergency reporting

When You Can File a Sarasota County Sheriff Report Online

SCSO’s Citizen Online Reporting System is intended for selected non-emergency incidents. The Sheriff says all of these conditions must apply:

  • The situation is not an emergency.
  • The incident occurred within the Sheriff’s applicable Sarasota County jurisdiction rather than the city limits of Sarasota, Venice or North Port.
  • There is no known suspect.
  • The person filing is at least 18.
  • A valid return email address is available.

Examples currently accepted through the online system include identity theft, online or telephone scams, theft, theft from a vehicle, vandalism, lost property subject to restrictions, fraudulent credit-card use and certain other qualifying incidents.

After opening the SCSO online-reporting page:
  1. Confirm the incident is not an emergency.
  2. Confirm it is within SCSO jurisdiction.
  3. Confirm there is no known suspect.
  4. Select the correct report category.
  5. Enter the date, time, location and involved-person information.
  6. Describe property with serial number, model and value when relevant.
  7. Save the temporary report number.
  8. Watch your email for approval, rejection or a final case number.
Do not use online reporting for an emergency. Call 911 for immediate danger or serious emergency. For a non-emergency requiring law-enforcement assistance, call 941-316-1201.

  3. Use FDLE for statewide Florida history.
  4. Use the FBI when a national criminal-history record is required.

South County civil service

The South County Office in Venice can currently process summonses, subpoenas, writs of garnishment, possession and replevin. The Sheriff says that location accepts checks or money orders for those civil services, not cash or credit cards.

For immediate service needs, the Sheriff may refer customers to the main Civil Office at 2071 Ringling Boulevard.

Employment

Sarasota County Sheriff Careers and Current Openings

SCSO hires both sworn and civilian employees across law enforcement, corrections, courts, communications and professional-support functions.

The Sheriff’s careers page says applicants should review the current opening and complete the forms required with the application rather than relying on old hiring requirements copied to third-party job sites.

After opening the official Sarasota Sheriff careers page:
  1. Open the current-position listing.
  2. Choose a sworn, corrections, communications or civilian opening that matches your qualifications.
  3. Read the minimum requirements for that specific position.
  4. Download any required applicant forms.
  5. Submit everything through the current application route shown by SCSO.
Useful local checks

Sarasota County Sheriff Mistakes That Are Easy to Avoid

  • Do not send regular inmate mail to 2020 Main Street. Ordinary mail currently goes through the Phoenix, Maryland scanning address.
  • Do not send irreplaceable originals in regular inmate mail. Scanned mail originals are destroyed after processing.
  • Do not assume SCSO created every arrest report. Several local agencies book people into the county jail.
  • Do not file an SCSO online report for an incident inside Sarasota, Venice or North Port city limits. Use the responsible city police agency.
  • Do not pay civil-service fees before confirming the service address is in Sarasota County.
  • Do not arrive at fingerprinting without the correct ID, card or ORI information.
  • Do not assume commissary, telephone, tablet and video-visitation funds are one account.
  • Do not use an inmate search as a background check for a serious legal decision.
  • Do not rely on social media for emergency contact. The Sheriff states its social accounts are not monitored in real time.
  • Do not treat an arrest entry as the final court result. Check the Clerk record for disposition.
Scam warning: independently verify any unsolicited caller demanding money for a warrant, bail payment, missed jury duty or alleged Sheriff fine. Do not send gift cards, cryptocurrency or hurried app payments based only on a phone call.

Legal and privacy notice: an arrest or jail record does not establish guilt. Some records may be confidential, exempt, sealed, expunged, juvenile or otherwise unavailable to the public.

FCRA notice: do not use an inmate roster, arrest page or this informational guide as a substitute for a legally compliant consumer report when making employment, housing, credit, insurance or another eligibility decision governed by consumer-reporting law.
