Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Phone Number, Address & Locations

If you need the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in Texas, the most important thing is choosing the right number and service before you call or drive to Conroe. Emergency dispatch, routine law-enforcement calls, jail questions, inmate searches, warrants, crash reports and public-record requests use different routes.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is headquartered at 1 Criminal Justice Drive, Conroe, TX 77301. Sheriff Wesley Doolittle has led the agency since January 2025. For general information call 936-760-5800; for a non-emergency law-enforcement response or to request a deputy, use 936-538-5900. Call 911 for an active emergency.

Independent-site notice: CountySheriffsOffice.org is an informational website and is not operated by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Montgomery County government, a Texas court or any jail-service provider.
Important phone-number update: Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office introduced 936-538-5900 as its dedicated non-emergency law-enforcement dispatch number in March 2025. Use 936-760-5800 for general information and department questions. This distinction helps keep dispatch available for calls that actually require a deputy.
Quick answer

Which Montgomery County Sheriff Number Should You Call?

One of the biggest weaknesses in older Montgomery County Sheriff guides is that they use the same telephone number for every situation. MCSO now separates routine general-information calls from calls that require law-enforcement dispatch.

After opening the official Montgomery County Sheriff website:

  2. Choose Jail for inmate, visitation and detention information.
  3. Use the records or forms area for public-information requests.
  4. Use Community resources for services such as Vacation Watch.
  5. Use the site’s current contact information instead of an older third-party directory.

Do Not Ask One Sheriff Department to Handle Every Record

The Sheriff’s Office handles many services, but not every criminal-justice record in Montgomery County belongs to MCSO. Jail custody, Sheriff incident reports, court files and crash reports are maintained through different systems.

Major 2026 portal change

Montgomery County Inmate Search Now Uses a Secured Public Portal

Montgomery County’s inmate-search process changed in 2026. The Sheriff’s Office announced on May 12, 2026 that its updated inmate-search feature was live again after a period when arrest information had been unavailable.

The current County Corrections Public Access Portal requires users to create an account, sign in and complete verification before searching. At minimum, the Sheriff’s announcement says an inmate’s last name is needed for the search.

Why the extra login exists: MCSO said unrestricted jail-roster information had been misused by scammers impersonating bail agents, Sheriff personnel and court officials. The Sheriff’s Office reported investigating more than 55 scam cases linked to misuse of roster information before adding the new security safeguards.
Open the current official inmate portal. The page should identify itself as the County Corrections Public Access Portal.
Create an account if you do not already have one. Complete the portal’s required verification.
Search at least the inmate’s last name. Add other available identity details when necessary.
Compare the complete record. Check booking photo, charges, bonding information and identifying details rather than relying only on the name.
Save the inmate ID and booking details. You may need them for jail communication, mail, deposits and court follow-up.
Call if the arrest is extremely recent. New bookings can require processing before all information is available.
After opening the Montgomery County Inmate Lookup System:
  1. Sign in or choose the account-creation option.
  2. Complete the anti-bot or identity verification requested by the portal.
  3. Search the inmate’s last name.
  4. Open the matching record.
  5. Verify the photograph and booking details before taking action.
  6. Save the inmate identifier and bond details.

For a more detailed custody workflow, use this site’s Montgomery County Sheriff inmate search and arrest-record guide.

Payment warning from MCSO: Sheriff employees, jail staff and legitimate bail-bond companies do not call families demanding immediate payment through gift cards, cash or unusual payment methods. Hang up and independently call the jail or court using an official number.
Detention services

Montgomery County Jail: What Families Should Confirm First

The Montgomery County Jail is operated by the Sheriff’s Office at the Criminal Justice Drive complex in Conroe. Before arranging a visit, sending money or mailing correspondence, confirm that the person is still in Montgomery County custody and save the inmate ID shown in the roster.

Visitation

Current Montgomery County jail guidance uses scheduled visitation rather than simply walking in. Because housing location, security restrictions and schedules can change, open the current Sheriff’s jail page and confirm the appointment process immediately before travelling.

After opening the official MCSO website for visitation:
  1. Open Commands.
  2. Choose Jail.
  3. Open the current Visitation page.
  4. Confirm the inmate’s housing location.
  5. Read the current appointment, identification, minor-visitor and dress-code rules.
  6. Do not drive to the jail until the visit is confirmed.
Housing-location check: Montgomery County has at times used another county facility for overflow housing. If the roster displays a different housing facility, confirm that facility’s visitation, mail and commissary procedures before sending anything or travelling.
Active warrant lookup

Montgomery County Warrant Search: Read the Official Disclaimer

Montgomery County provides a dedicated online warrant-search system. Users can search by name or warrant number.

The county itself warns that the search is provided as a public service and is not considered an official court record. It should not be used by a citizen as confirmation or probable cause that a warrant is currently active.

After opening the Montgomery County Warrant Search:
  1. Complete the human-verification step.
  2. Choose a name search or warrant-number search.
  3. For a name search, enter the complete last name and required first-name characters.
  4. Review the possible match carefully.
  5. Read the county disclaimer shown on the page.
  6. Use the responsible court or a licensed attorney when legal confirmation or advice is required.
Do not try to detain someone yourself. The official warrant portal specifically warns citizens not to take individual action based on the information displayed.

If you are checking a possible warrant for yourself

Do not rely on an old screenshot or unsolicited telephone caller. Verify the information through the official portal and responsible court. If surrender, bond or criminal exposure is a concern, a licensed Texas criminal-defense attorney can explain your legal options.

Texas Public Information Act requests

Request a Montgomery County Sheriff Report Through Open Records

MCSO moved its public-record request process to GovQA in July 2024. The system is used for requests involving Sheriff’s Office records, including electronic files, video, audio and other releasable agency records.

Submitting a request does not mean every item will automatically be released. Open Records personnel review requested information for Texas Public Information Act requirements, statutory confidentiality and applicable exceptions.

Identify the agency that created the record. MCSO cannot provide a police report created by a different city police department.
Gather the incident information. Include the report number when known, date, approximate time, location and involved names.
Open the MCSO Open Records route. Use the official Sheriff’s website rather than emailing an address copied from an old directory.
Describe the exact record you need. Ask for an incident report, body-camera recording or specific electronic record rather than “everything.”
Track the GovQA request. Keep your request number and messages from the records unit.
After opening the official Sheriff website:
  1. Open the Forms & Documents or records area.
  2. Select the current Open Records Request link.
  3. Follow the GovQA submission route.
  4. Provide a specific description of the requested Sheriff record.
  5. Save the request confirmation for follow-up.
Open Records assistance 936-760-5800 · choose the records/open-records option

Do not request a court judgment from MCSO. Criminal court pleadings, hearing entries and certified court records are maintained by the applicable Montgomery County Clerk rather than the Sheriff’s Open Records unit.
Vehicle crashes

Texas Crash Reports Use TxDOT CRIS

Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Reports are handled through the Texas Department of Transportation’s Crash Records Information System. This is a separate process from requesting a Sheriff’s incident report.

After opening the TxDOT crash-report page:
  1. Choose the Crash Report Online Purchase System.
  2. Enter the information requested to locate the crash.
  3. Confirm that you qualify to obtain the report under Texas law.
  4. Pay the current report fee and system surcharge when applicable.
  5. Follow the email/download instructions after purchase.
CRIS does not replace an MCSO records request for everything from the scene. TxDOT says dash-camera video, photographs, field notes and other investigative material should be requested from the investigating law-enforcement agency.
After arrest or jail booking

Use the Correct Montgomery County Clerk for Court Records

The Sheriff’s Office may arrest or book a person, but the court file belongs to the court system. Montgomery County splits criminal records between the District Clerk and County Clerk.

County Clerk criminal records

After opening the Montgomery County Clerk Court Records Inquiry:
  1. Select Criminal Records.
  2. Search the case using the available name or case-number fields.
  3. Confirm that the defendant matches the person you are researching.
  4. Review the public case information.
  5. Contact the Clerk when an official or certified copy is needed.

District Clerk

For felony or District Court criminal records, Montgomery County District Clerk’s Records and Research office is at 301 N. Main Street, Suite 103, Conroe, TX 77301, with published telephone number 936-539-7855.

Statewide public registry

Use Texas DPS for the Public Sex Offender Registry

Texas DPS maintains the statewide Sex Offender Registry using information supplied by local law-enforcement registration authorities. This is the more appropriate public search when you need statewide registration information rather than a jail booking.

After opening the Texas DPS Sex Offender Registration Program:
  1. Choose the public Sex Offender Registry search.
  2. Search by the available name, location or other supported field.
  3. Confirm the identity carefully before relying on the result.
  4. Review the registration details and reporting jurisdiction.
  5. Contact the registration authority if a current compliance question needs official clarification.
Do not confuse three different records: a sex-offender registry entry, jail booking and criminal court conviction serve different purposes and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Community service

Montgomery County Vacation Watch Can Help While You Are Away

MCSO offers a Vacation Watch program for qualifying residences in its service area. Deputies can conduct periodic security checks while the resident is away, subject to call volume and operational priorities.

After opening the official MCSO website:
  1. Open the Community section.
  2. Choose Vacation Watch.
  3. Open the current submission form.
  4. Enter the travel dates and emergency-contact information accurately.
  5. List vehicles, authorized visitors or other details requested by MCSO.
  6. Submit the request before leaving town rather than after departure.

Current community guidance also directs Montgomery County residents to 936-760-5800 and the appropriate menu option for Vacation Watch assistance.

Conroe, The Woodlands, Magnolia, Willis, New Caney and unincorporated communities

How MCSO Patrol Coverage Works Across Montgomery County

Montgomery County is much larger than Conroe. The Sheriff’s Office patrol structure serves unincorporated communities and works alongside municipal police, constables, DPS and other agencies.

MCSO uses patrol districts and commands covering different parts of the county, including the Conroe/northeast area, south county, east county/New Caney, west county/Magnolia and Lake Conroe areas, plus District 6 law enforcement in The Woodlands Township.

Which Montgomery County law enforcement agency to contact
Situation
Best first step
Crime in progress anywhere
Call 911 and let dispatch route the appropriate agency
Non-emergency event in MCSO patrol jurisdiction
Call 936-538-5900 to request law-enforcement assistance
Incident handled by Conroe Police or another city agency
Request the report from that municipal agency rather than MCSO
Unsure which agency has jurisdiction
Use non-emergency dispatch and describe the location clearly
Local practical point: a street address that says “Spring,” “Magnolia,” “Conroe” or “Porter” does not by itself tell you which law-enforcement agency created a report. Agency jurisdiction can differ from the postal city shown in the address.
MCSO specifically changed its roster because of fraud

Montgomery County Sheriff and Jail Payment Scam Warning

The 2026 inmate-search redesign makes scam prevention especially important for this county. MCSO said scammers had used real-time jail information to contact families while posing as bail agents, Sheriff employees or court officials.

Stop the transaction if someone:
  • demands immediate payment to avoid arrest;
  • claims an inmate will be released only if you pay during the call;
  • asks for gift cards, cryptocurrency or unusual cash-transfer methods;
  • threatens you for hanging up to verify the claim;
  • tells you not to call the official Sheriff or court number;
  • uses a real inmate’s name or charge as “proof” that the call is legitimate.

Safer response

  1. End the call.
  2. Do not use a callback number supplied by the caller.
  3. Open the official MCSO or court website yourself.
  4. Call the published official number.
  5. Verify the inmate, case and payment requirement independently.
