Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Phone Number, Address & Locations

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office is headquartered at 498 Chattin Drive in Canton, but not every Sheriff service is handled there. Criminal Investigations operates from a separate Woodstock location, court records belong to the Clerk of Courts, weapons carry licenses are handled by Probate Court, and inmate mail now uses a separate scanning address.

For non-emergency dispatch call 678-493-4080. For Sheriff headquarters, the Adult Detention Center or general jail information, call 678-493-4200. Call 911 for an emergency.

Independent-site notice: CountySheriffsOffice.org is an independent informational website. It is not operated by the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office, Cherokee County government, Cherokee County courts, Georgia Bureau of Investigation or any jail-service provider.
Important local distinction: Cherokee County has both a Sheriff’s Office and a Marshal’s Office. The Sheriff handles law-enforcement patrol, jail, warrants, court security and related public-safety functions. The county Marshal primarily handles county code enforcement, animal-control-related enforcement and support functions. Do not send an emergency police call to the Marshal’s Office.

Current Sheriff

Frank Reynolds is the current Sheriff of Cherokee County. The official Sheriff site identifies the agency as a full-service law-enforcement organization operating the Adult Detention Center, patrol operations, investigations, warrant/civil functions and court security.

After opening the official Cherokee Sheriff contact page:
  1. Choose Headquarters, Jail or CID based on your task.
  2. Confirm the current address before travelling.
  3. Use 678-493-4080 for routine non-emergency dispatch.
  4. Use the direct CID number for an investigation handled from the South Annex.
  5. Call 911 for an active emergency.
Canton, Woodstock, Holly Springs and unincorporated Cherokee County

The Sheriff Does Not Replace Every City Police Department

Cherokee Sheriff patrol is especially important in the unincorporated parts of the county. Incorporated communities such as Canton, Woodstock and Holly Springs also operate municipal police departments.

If you are unsure which agency handled an incident, use the responding officer’s agency name, case number or report paperwork rather than assuming every Cherokee County arrest or crash belongs to the Sheriff.

  2. Compare it with the county Marshal’s duties.
  3. Use the Sheriff for traditional law-enforcement and detention matters.
  4. Use the Marshal route when the issue involves the county-code or animal-control functions described by the county.

How to Search Cherokee County Jail Inmates

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office provides a free official inmate list for people held at the Adult Detention Center.

Read the Sheriff’s scam warning before entering the roster. The Sheriff specifically warns that scammers use inmate information to identify family members and demand money. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office says it will never call inmate family members and request money for bond, ankle monitors, pretrial release or similar jail services.
Open the official Cherokee jail list. Use the Sheriff-hosted system rather than a paid people-search website.
Acknowledge the scam warning. The warning appears before the public roster.
Search the legal name. Try a broader surname search when a full-name search does not work.
Compare identifying details. Do not rely on a name match alone.
Save the inmate number. It is useful for mail, accounts and jail follow-up.
Check the court record separately. A booking record is not the final court outcome.
After opening the official Cherokee County inmate search:
  1. Read the scam notice first.
  2. Continue to the Sheriff-hosted inmate list.
  3. Search the inmate’s name.
  4. Confirm the correct individual.
  5. Save the inmate number, charges and bond information.
  6. Call 678-493-4200 when a very recent arrest or release needs direct confirmation.

For a more custody-focused walkthrough, this website also has a separate Cherokee County inmate search and arrest-record guide.

Arrest is not conviction: charges shown at booking are allegations. They may later be changed, dismissed, prosecuted or otherwise resolved in court.
Adult Detention Center

What Families Can Handle Through the Cherokee County Jail

The Adult Detention Center at 498 Chattin Drive handles booking, inmate property, accounts, phone access, medical care, visitation and bond administration.

Adult Detention Center 498 Chattin Drive, Canton, GA 30115
Main jail / Sheriff line 678-493-4200
Inmate accounts questions 678-493-4209
Medical inquiries 678-493-4547

Inmate property release

An inmate who wants property released must complete the jail’s property-release form. The person named on that authorization can collect the approved property. Current Sheriff guidance lists property pickup Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Clothing is treated differently from the other property held for an inmate, so confirm the current procedure before making a special trip.

Medical, dental and mental-health care

The Sheriff’s current inmate-information page says inmates receive in-house medical, dental and mental-health treatment through the contracted medical provider. Family members with appropriate medical information can use the jail’s medical contact route, while privacy rules may restrict information disclosed back to callers.

After opening the official Inmate Information page:
  1. Choose the section for mail, property, accounts, medical care or telephones.
  2. Save the inmate number before using a provider service.
  3. Review the current restriction before mailing or depositing anything.
  4. Use the direct jail contact when a time-sensitive procedure is unclear.
Onsite and remote video visits

Cherokee County Jail Visitation Uses iWebVisit

The Adult Detention Center offers both free onsite video visitation and paid remote visitation through iWebVisit.

Free onsite visitation

Onsite visits take place at the Visitation Center at 498 Chattin Drive. Visits must be scheduled at least one day in advance, last up to 30 minutes and are limited to no more than two visitors at a terminal.

The inmate’s housing assignment determines the onsite visitation day. The current Sheriff schedule uses Monday/Thursday/Saturday for one group of housing units and Tuesday/Friday/Sunday for another. There is no onsite visitation on Wednesday.

Commissary and telephone service

How to Add Money or Receive Calls From a Cherokee County Inmate

Money in an inmate’s possession at booking is deposited into an inmate account. Family and friends can add funds for commissary and other approved expenses.

Inmate account deposits

  • Money orders are accepted for inmate-account deposits.
  • Cash and personal checks are not accepted through the mail for deposits.
  • The Adult Detention Center lobby has an ATM-style deposit option.
  • The current jail information also provides an online deposit route.
  • Questions about inmate commissary accounts can be directed to 678-493-4209.
Do not confuse a commissary deposit with bond. Money placed in an inmate’s account does not post the person’s criminal bond.

Inmate telephone calls

Inmates generally have telephone access from approximately 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., subject to housing and disciplinary rules. The Sheriff’s current page directs telephone-account and billing issues to Inmate Sales at 1-877-998-5678.

After opening the Sheriff’s Inmate Services section:
  1. Find Inmate Accounts and Commissary Services.
  2. Confirm the inmate’s name and number.
  3. Use the current approved deposit route.
  4. Find the telephone section when setting up inmate calls.
  5. Use the published provider support number for billing or connection problems.
Mail changed in December 2023

Personal Cherokee County Inmate Mail Is Scanned Off-Site

Cherokee Sheriff changed personal inmate-mail distribution to reduce contraband. Ordinary personal mail is now sent to a central scanning facility, opened, scanned and delivered electronically to the inmate.

Personal inmate mail:
JAILATM.com – Cherokee Sheriff’s Office
Inmate Name / Inmate Number
925B Peachtree St. NE, Box 2062
Atlanta, GA 30309

Original personal correspondence sent to the scanning facility is not delivered physically to the inmate and is subject to the provider’s document-retention process.

Legal and government mail is different

Legal and government correspondence considered privileged is mailed directly to the Adult Detention Center rather than the scanning facility. Privileged mail may be inspected for contraband in the inmate’s presence but is not handled like ordinary personal scanned mail.

Common mail restrictions

  • No correspondence between inmates at the Cherokee County ADC.
  • Mail from other jails or prisons is restricted.
  • A return address is required.
  • Content involving illegal activity, escape plans, gang codes or prohibited sexual material is restricted.
  • Items containing adhesives, perfumes, lipstick, chemical agents or other security hazards can be refused.
  • Cash and unauthorized checks can be returned to the sender.
After opening the official inmate-mail instructions:
  1. Determine whether the correspondence is personal or privileged legal mail.
  2. Use the scanning address for ordinary personal mail.
  3. Include the inmate’s current name and inmate number.
  4. Use a complete return address.
  5. Review the current prohibited-content list before mailing.
Cash, professional and property bonds

Cherokee County Bond Has Several Local Rules Families Should Check

Cherokee Sheriff administers cash, professional and qualifying property bonds at the Adult Detention Center. A bond is a guarantee of court appearance; it is not the criminal fine or final case disposition.

Cash bond

The current Sheriff instructions say the full bond amount and associated fees are required. In addition to cash, the Sheriff’s Office accepts cashier’s checks under the cash-bond procedure.

A separate $20 non-refundable state-required bond fee must be paid in exact cash. The Sheriff’s Office says it does not make change for this fee.

Card payment is also available through the current online bond-payment route. The Sheriff’s published instructions identify additional provider charges, including an automation charge and percentage-based administrative fee.

Professional bondsman

A professional bonding company approved for use at the jail may post a surety bond. The Sheriff publishes the current approved list but cannot recommend one company over another.

Property bond

A Cherokee County property owner may be able to use qualifying real property. The Sheriff requires current ownership documents, paid property-tax information, mortgage information and sufficient clear equity.

All parties named on the deed generally must participate in the property-bond process, subject to the Sheriff’s current documented exceptions. A lien is placed against property used for bond.

Property located in another county

Cherokee County also provides a process for an approved property bond prepared through the Sheriff’s Office in the county where the property is located. The completed bond package must remain sealed when delivered to Cherokee County.

After opening the official Cherokee County bonding instructions:
  1. Confirm the inmate and exact bond amount.
  2. Determine whether the bond is cash, professional or property.
  3. Review the state-required $20 fee.
  4. For property bond, gather every ownership, tax and mortgage document listed.
  5. For out-of-county property, follow the sealed-envelope procedure exactly.
  6. Call the Bond Administrator at 678-493-4164 when the current requirement is unclear.
Never pay an unsolicited caller claiming a special bond, ankle-monitor or pretrial-release fee. Cherokee Sheriff places a scam warning directly in front of its inmate roster because families have been targeted using real inmate information.
Warrant/Civil Unit

How Cherokee County Warrants Are Handled

The Warrant/Civil Unit serves and maintains local warrants, assists other jurisdictions with local warrant service, manages holds with other agencies and coordinates felony extraditions from outside Georgia.

Unlike counties that publish a simple public active-warrant list, Cherokee Sheriff’s current website emphasizes the Warrant/Civil Unit rather than presenting a broad public warrant database as the definitive legal source.

The Sheriff does not collect warrant or fine payments by telephone or automated solicitation. If someone calls saying payment will cancel a warrant or stop an arrest, end the call and independently contact the responsible court or Sheriff unit.
After opening the official Warrant & Civil page:
  1. Read the Warrant/Civil Unit’s current responsibilities.
  2. Use the listed division contact for a legitimate process question.
  3. Do not send money because of an unsolicited warrant call.
  4. Use the issuing court or a licensed Georgia attorney when legal confirmation or advice is necessary.
Subpoenas, evictions and process service

Cherokee Sheriff Civil Service Fees and Requirements

  4. Include payment with papers as instructed.
  5. For an eviction, use the separate eviction procedure and current signed-writ requirements.
Incident reports and Georgia Open Records Act

Request Cherokee Sheriff Reports From the Correct Records Route

The Sheriff’s Records page separates ordinary incident-report requests from broader Georgia Open Records Act requests.

If you already have the Sheriff case number

Call 678-493-4140 Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to request the incident report.

For broader open-record requests

Use the Sheriff’s current Open Records link for records maintained by the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office. Records can be withheld or redacted when Georgia law makes an exception applicable.

Accident reports

The Sheriff provides a separate accident-report retrieval route. Do not assume an accident report, incident narrative, body-camera recording and court case are the same record.

Confirm the agency. Make sure the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office created the report.
Gather the case number. It is the fastest way to identify a specific incident report.
Add the incident date and location. This helps avoid wrong-event matches.
Choose incident report, accident report or open-record request. They are not always processed through the same route.
Describe electronic evidence specifically. Identify the incident, date and record rather than requesting “everything.”
After opening the official Cherokee Sheriff Records page:
  1. Choose Incident Reports, Open Records or Accident Reports.
  2. If you have a case number, follow the incident-report telephone instructions.
  3. Use the Open Records route for broader Sheriff records.
  4. Use the crash-report link for the accident record itself.
  5. Contact the agency that actually created the record if it was not CCSO.
Court records are not Sheriff records

Use Cherokee County Clerk of Courts for the Criminal Case

The Sheriff may make the arrest and operate the jail, but the Clerk of Courts maintains the court record for Superior, State and Magistrate Court matters.

Cherokee County Clerk of Courts Frank C. Mills III Justice Center, 90 North Street, Canton, GA 30114
General Clerk assistance 678-493-6511

The Clerk’s online case-search system is designed to show case posture, parties, court dates and judge information. The Clerk warns that the online system does not replace the official file when the most current or complete record is needed.

After opening the official Cherokee County Clerk of Courts site:
  1. Choose Case Search.
  2. Search the defendant’s legal name or known case number.
  3. Confirm the correct court and defendant.
  4. Review the current docket and calendar information.
  5. Contact the Clerk when you need an official or certified copy.

First appearance and bail hearings

Cherokee County Magistrate Court operates continuously for criminal judicial functions including first appearances, bail hearings and warrant applications. The court states that people booked into the Adult Detention Center receive the required initial judicial review under the Magistrate Court process.

After opening the Cherokee County Magistrate Court page:
  1. Review the court’s criminal jurisdiction.
  2. Use the Case Docket Search when appropriate.
  3. Use the court rather than the jail for judicial questions about hearings or warrants.
  4. Call the Magistrate Clerk at 678-493-6431 for clerk-service questions.
Name-based criminal history and record restriction

Cherokee Sheriff Background Checks Are Not the Same as a Court Search

Cherokee Sheriff provides a name-based Georgia criminal-history consent/inquiry form for authorized non-criminal-justice purposes such as employment, housing, licensing, adoption, volunteering and personal inspection.

The Sheriff’s own form states that the result is name-based. For a more accurate criminal-history process, fingerprints may be required depending on the requesting organization and legal purpose.

After opening the Sheriff’s current criminal-history consent form:
  1. Identify the exact permitted purpose for the check.
  2. Complete the subject’s identity information accurately.
  3. Provide the requested release destination.
  4. Complete required signature and notarization fields.
  5. Confirm the current submission procedure and fee with the Sheriff’s GCIC/NCIC service before paying.

Record restriction for an old arrest

Georgia uses the term record restriction for what many people still call expungement. Cherokee Sheriff provides instructions for qualifying arrest records.

For arrests before July 1, 2013, the applicant generally starts with the arresting agency. The Sheriff’s current instructions explain that the prosecutor reviews the request and that an approved application may require a $25 GCIC processing fee when it must be sent to the Georgia Crime Information Center.

For arrests on or after July 1, 2013, the process is different and can be handled through the prosecutor/court disposition process rather than the older arresting-agency application workflow.

After opening the Cherokee Sheriff Record Restriction page:
  1. Check the arrest date first.
  2. Use the pre-July-1-2013 procedure only when it applies.
  3. Complete only one arrest date per request form.
  4. Do not send a GCIC fee before the request reaches the appropriate approval stage.
  5. Contact the Sheriff or prosecutor if the disposition history is unclear.
A common wrong-office mistake

Weapons Carry Licenses Are Handled by Probate Court, Not the Sheriff

If you need a Georgia Weapons Carry License in Cherokee County, do not go to Sheriff headquarters expecting the Sheriff to issue it. Cherokee County Probate Court handles new and renewal applications.

  2. Complete it before travelling when practical.
  3. Bring current identification.
  4. Bring the current license if renewing.
  5. Review the current fee and payment method.
  6. Go to Probate Court rather than Sheriff Headquarters.
Recovered or seized property

Evidence and Property Release Is by Appointment

If the Sheriff’s Office is holding property as evidence, the item cannot simply be collected from the lobby. The case must first be researched and release approval obtained from the responsible deputy, detective, investigator or court.

The Sheriff’s current Evidence Unit instructions say property release is by appointment Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m..

Evidence Unit 678-493-4229
Appointment window Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.

Firearm return takes extra verification

For firearm property, the Sheriff’s current procedure includes a criminal-history review and checks to verify the recipient can lawfully possess the firearm and that the firearm has not been reported stolen.

After opening the official Evidence Return page:
  1. Have the Sheriff incident number available.
  2. Call 678-493-4229 for an appointment.
  3. Allow time for case-release authorization.
  4. For firearms, be prepared for the additional legal-possession verification.
Registered offender information

Use the Sheriff’s Sex Offender Database for Local Registry Information

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations function maintains local sex-offender registry responsibilities and provides a public database from the Sheriff website.

The Sheriff also provides alert tools so residents can monitor relevant registry information in their area.

After opening the official Cherokee Sheriff homepage:
  1. Choose Sex Offender Database from the Sheriff quick links.
  2. Search the supported name or location field.
  3. Confirm the correct individual carefully.
  4. Use the notification option when you want available local alerts.
  5. Do not confuse registry status with current jail custody.
A major Cherokee County family-safety issue

The Sheriff Will Not Call an Inmate’s Family Demanding Money

Cherokee Sheriff places an unusually strong scam notice directly in front of its public inmate roster because scammers have used jail information to target families.

Treat the call as a scam when someone claims to be from Cherokee Sheriff and demands money for:
  • an inmate bond;
  • an ankle monitor;
  • pretrial-program release;
  • a warrant or fine;
  • another supposed jail-release requirement.

The Sheriff’s Warrant/Civil page separately states that Cherokee Sheriff does not collect or solicit payment for warrants or fines over the telephone or through an automated service.

Safer verification

  1. End the incoming call.
  2. Do not use a callback number provided by the caller.
  3. Open the official Sheriff website yourself.
  4. Call 678-493-4200 or the appropriate official division number.
  5. Verify the inmate, bond or warrant independently.
Real information does not prove the caller is real. A scammer may know the inmate’s name, arrest, charges or family relationship because some custody information is publicly searchable.
Before calling, mailing or paying

Cherokee County Sheriff Office Quick Checklist

Use 678-493-4080 for non-emergency dispatch. Use 911 for immediate danger.
Use 498 Chattin Drive for Headquarters and the Adult Detention Center. Criminal Investigations has a separate Woodstock office.
Search the official inmate roster before calling the jail. Save the inmate number.
Read the scam warning before paying anything. Cherokee Sheriff will not call family members demanding inmate-release money.
Check the housing assignment before scheduling onsite visitation. Visitation days depend on the inmate’s current housing unit.
Use the Atlanta scanning address for ordinary inmate mail. Legal mail follows a different procedure.
Confirm the bond type. Cash, professional and property bonds have different requirements.
Use Central Records for Sheriff reports and the Clerk for court records. The arrest report and court case are different records.
Use Probate Court for a weapons carry license. The Sheriff does not issue the license application itself.
Schedule evidence pickup. Do not arrive expecting seized property to be released immediately.

Editorial review: this Cherokee County, Georgia article was rebuilt from current Cherokee Sheriff, Cherokee County government, Clerk of Courts, Magistrate Court and Probate Court information on September 27, 2026. It corrects the older thin directory format and adds current local procedures for the jail, scanned inmate mail, visitation, bonds, Warrant/Civil services, records, court routing, evidence return and weapons carry licensing.

Freshness: detention rules, visitation schedules, bond fees, provider charges, civil service fees, court procedures, phone numbers and agency contacts can change. Recheck the responsible official page immediately before travelling, paying, mailing or filing a request.

Legal and privacy notice: an arrest, jail booking or warrant allegation is not proof of guilt. Juvenile, sealed, confidential, victim, medical and active-investigation records may be restricted. This article provides general public-information guidance and is not legal advice.

FCRA notice: do not use a jail roster, arrest entry, registry result or ordinary public-record search as a substitute for a legally compliant consumer report when making employment, housing, credit, insurance or another decision governed by the Fair Credit Reporting Act or similar law.

If this is an emergency, a crime in progress, a threat to life, or immediate danger, call 911. This website is not a sheriff office, jail, court, legal service, or emergency service.
Fastest safe order

Start with the official sheriff or jail roster, confirm custody by phone only when needed, then check court records for hearings or case details.

Scam warning

Do not pay anyone who calls demanding gift cards, crypto, wire transfers, or urgent warrant payment. Verify through official sheriff channels.

Inmate Search Step Helper

Use this before searching a jail roster or inmate lookup portal. It helps you choose the best search method and avoid wrong-person matches.

Bond, Release and Custody Status Helper

Use this to organize what to check before asking about bond, release timing, facility location or court status.

Visitation, Phone and Mail Checklist

Use this before planning a jail visit, video visit, inmate phone setup, commissary deposit, or mail delivery.

Warrant Information Safety Helper

Use this if you are trying to understand warrant information safely. This tool does not confirm warrants and does not provide legal advice.

If you believe you may have an active warrant, consider speaking with a licensed criminal defense attorney before going to any law enforcement office. Do not ignore court notices.

Sheriff Report and Arrest Record Request Helper

Use this before requesting accident reports, incident reports, arrest records, jail records, public records or background-related information.

Sheriff Call / Warrant Payment Scam Checker

Use this if someone called, texted, emailed or messaged you claiming to be from a sheriff office, court, jail, deputy or warrant unit.

Official Sheriff Office Resource Finder

Enter county and state to create safe searches for official sheriff websites, jail rosters, inmate lookup, warrants, visitation, records requests, court records and this site’s guide.

Sheriff Office vs Court vs Jail

  • Sheriff/Jail: custody, booking, jail roster, visitation, inmate mail, some warrants.
  • Court/Clerk: case status, hearings, court records, fines, court dates.
  • Attorney: legal advice, warrant risk, criminal charges, bond strategy.

Best sitewide placement

Add this tool after the first inmate-search or contact section, or before FAQs. It turns a normal guide into a practical action page.
